Mazatlan Shopping

Mazatlan shopping provides many fine shops, a modern shopping mall and an unending number of open air stores. If you enjoy some shopping on your vacation, you will discover that prices are very reasonable, much more so than on the Caribbean side of Mexico. Great deals can be found shopping in Mazatlan!

Many of the local shops feature the crafts that are famous all over Mexico. Unique Mexican art can be found, custom made Mexican leather and clothing. There are also some great buys on sporting goods, resort wear and jewelry. You’ll even find a Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club.

One of the more unique stores is "Sea Shell World" featuring many truly unique shells and items form the sea. It’s in the Golden Zone near the hotel Playa Mazatlan. There are more shells and types of shells in this store than I knew existed. Don’t forget to check out the crocs in the back!

The central market located in the middle of downtown about a square block of everything you can imagine, and then some. If are in the area, be sure to spend some time, you will be surprised at the diversity of merchandise. Offering everything from hanging meat and hogs heads, to locally made sandals and native Mexican musical instruments. This is a true "Mercado Central" in the old Mexican tradition.

A tip about bargaining. It seems to be a way of business in Mexico, except of course in the supermarkets and large chain stores. However all of the beach vendors and many of the souvenir shops expect it, and are almost insulted if you don't try. On the other hand, they are also happy to take double the money they would be willing to settle for, so the choice is yours.

Another tip. Avoid Mazatlan shopping in the downtown and Golden Zone areas on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Why? Because that is when the cruise ships are in port, and all those people wearing those little paper tags (which identify them as "cruisers" to the shop owners) seem to have dollar signs on their foreheads. The bargaining becomes much tougher and the initial prices are often much higher. If you are one of the "cruisers", try taking your cruise I.D. tag off and separating yourselves from the crowd a little bit!
