Loreto City Guide – Loreto Activities

Below are a few Loreto activities and attractions in the town of Loreto itself. Loreto activities and minimal and historic in nature. This isn't a place you go for the action and nightlife!

The beauty and surreal nature of the Sea of Cortez and the surrounding dessert are the real attraction. The Loreto Bay Development nearby offers world class golf opportunities.

Mision Nuestra Senora De Loreto
Plaza Juarez

Loreto's historic Misión Nuestra Señora De Loreto was founded in 1697 by Jesuit priests and was the first mission in all of the California's. The church, rebuilt after an earthquake in the late 1800s, gradually fell to ruins, and was reconstructed again in 1955. The bell tower located on Calle Savatierra, was a later addition to the original mission design. And stands as a landmark for Loreto's historic town center.

In 1997, due to the depletion in the area's fishery, Mexico's President Zedillo created a national marine park, deeming nearly half a million acres of water, islands, and shoreline near Loreto a natural protected area, and naming it Parque Nacional Bahia de Loreto. The park encompasses much of the shoreline and the five offshore islands—Coronado, Carmen, Danzante, Monserrat, and Santa Catalan.

Museo de las Misiones
Plaza Juarez; 613/135-0441
Extending off the west side of Misio Loreto is Museo De Las Misiones, featuring displays ranging from pre-colonization indigenous times through the mission period.
