Signs along Highway 307 point to the entrances of cenotes, some with intricate caves and caverns such as Dos Ojos and Gran Cenote. Some 15 minutes south of Tulum the sign near the entry gate to Sian Ka'an biosphere reserve details a staggering number of flora and fauna species within its boundaries. The reserve covers approximately 1.5 million acres. Birdwatching in Tulum is unsurpassed.

Narrow jungle roads with very reserve leads to the villages of Boca Paila and , situated on a small peninsula, and Punta Allen at the southern end. Sportsmen love Boca Paila for its bone fishing and fly-fishing. Deep-sea fishing trips can be arranged at the local lodge.

Known for its spiny lobster trapping, the quaint fishing village of Punta Allen is ideal for observing bird colonies, crocodiles and manatees. You'll find several guest houses and family-run restaurants, and a quiet beach.
