minutes south of Playa Del Carmen, Tulum is ideal for solitude, contemplation and communion with nature.
Just north of the resort area is the famous archaeological site of Maya Tulum, one of Mexico's most
visited attractions. Tulum is the modern-day name of the site meaning "wall" or "fortress". In ancient times it was
believed to be," my fortress" city of the "Dawn".
Spectacular archaeology is only part of Tulum's magic. Sun soaked days on deserted beaches and the
sound of the waves rolling to shore provide a soothing atmosphere. Cool to the touch, beaches rated by the Travel
Channel are pure white powder that never burns the soles of your feet.
Sunkist shores dotted with palapa-type resorts are surrounded by a canopy of greenery. Long
stretches of secluded coastline to the north are interrupted by a handful of resorts. At the southern end of the
road mounds of white sand create small hills from atop which, you can see the beach stretch onward for miles.
Some Tulum resorts and Tulum hotels provide a haven for spiritual exercise. Yoga and meditation

area. Signs along Highway 307 point to the entrances of cenotes, some with intricate caves and caverns such as Dos
Ojos and Gran Cenote. Safety measures require special certification for cave and cavern dies.
Some 15 minutes south of Tulum the sign near the entry gate to Sian Ka'an biosphere reserve details
a staggering number of flora and fauna species within its boundaries. The reserve covers approximately 1.5 million
acres. Birdwatching in Tulum is unsurpassed.
Narrow jungle roads with very reserve leads to the villages of Boca Paila and , situated on a small
peninsula, and Punta Allen at the southern end. Sportsmen love Boca Paila for its bone fishing and fly-fishing.
Deep-sea fishing trips can be arranged at the local lodge.
Known for its spiny lobster trapping, the quaint fishing village of Punta Allen is ideal for
observing bird colonies, crocodiles and manatees. You'll find several guest houses and family-run restaurants, and
a quiet beach.
